With the support of her service dog, SSD Raven, Patti O’Donnell successfully completed her doctorate. “This has been a long road, but Raven was right there with me,” says Patti. Raven made it much easier for Patti to move about on campus. He opened heavy doors, picked up items that she dropped, and assisted her if she fell. “He really has been a blessing in all ways for me to be able to be more self sufficient.” Raven also serves as an ambassador for service dogs. Patti and Raven visit elementary schools and teach the students about services dogs and the many ways they can assist people.
An Incredible Bond
An incredibly strong bond has formed between SSD Aurora and her partner, a young man. Aurora follows him around the house and sleeps with him every night. Often, the boy will lay his head on her as if she was a pillow, or he’ll drape his arm around her while she snuggles close to him. He does not speak, so he uses hand cues and sign language to communicate with her. When he feeds her, he uses sign language for “eat” to let her know that she can eat. The family cannot imagine life without Aurora.
