Susquehanna Service Dogs
The Dogs
- Service Dogs
- Service Dogs assist children and adults with mobility disabilities, primarily individuals who use wheelchairs, to become more independent. SSD also trains service dogs to do balance work. In addition service dogs are trained to work with individuals with a psychiatric disability.
- Balance Dogs
- Balance Dogs are trained to assist a person with a physical disability that interferes with their ability to walk. Because of the broad variety of physical conditions which may cause their disability, each dog is custom-trained for the particular needs of the specific human partner.
- Hearing Dogs
- Hearing dogs assist their partners by alerting to specific sounds in the environment. The person with a hearing disability is able to function independently and need not rely solely on visual signals. For a person who has lost his/her hearing later in life, it is helpful to be reminded of every day sounds by observing the actions of the dog.
- Facility/Therapy Dogs
- Therapy Dogs are trained to assist a Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist, Psychologist or Socialworker working with a person with a disability. Much of this training is carried out in conjunction with the programs of Keystone Children and Family Services, in support of their therapy activities. Because of the broad variety of physical conditions which can influence a disability, each dog is custom-trained for the particular tasks which will support their therapist partner.
- Companion Dogs
- Companion Dogs are specially trained dogs that are placed in a family with a child with autism. These dogs are available only to families living within one hour driving time of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. This would include all or part of these counties: Dauphin, Cumberland, Perry, Lancaster, Lebanon and York.
