Early Head Start Services

Early Head Start (EHS) provides comprehensive services to pregnant women and children from birth through age three.  The focus of the program is to promote healthy development and foster parent-child interactions that help to prepare children for later school success. Early Head Start serves 140 families by offering both full year center based programming and full year home based visitation programs.

Early Head Start is federally funded and accepts child care subsidies for wraparound services.

EHS Center Based Programs

Center based Early Head Start offers child care services in a safe, clean environment.  The program provides breakfast, lunch, and snacks, which include formula and baby or toddler meals, as well as naps and individualized care.  The maximum class size is eight children with a staff-child ratio of 1 to 4. Teaching staff work closely with parents to deliver quality care and activities that meet each child’s needs.  Staff complete two home visits and two parent-teacher conferences per year with all families.

Martin Luther King Center

The Martin Luther King Center offers full year child care in Harrisburg for children ages birth to five. The maximum class size for infants and toddlers ages 6 weeks to 3 years is eight children.

EHS Home Based Program

Early Head Start’s home based program is offered in Harrisburg, Steelton and Carlisle. Families participating in this program receive weekly visits in their home from a home visitor who supports the child’s learning and development as well as fostering positive parent-child relationships. Each weekly visit lasts for an hour and a half. Home visitors also provide families with information about community resources.

Pregnant women who enroll in the home based program receive a weekly visit that focuses on prenatal care, delivery, postnatal care, and care of their newborn.

The home based program also includes two family socialization days each month.
