International Training Direct Support Professional
Purpose
We propose an extensive training program for international citizens who wish to complete instruction and develop competencies in direct support, community-based services for people with mental retardation and mental illness. This educational program is presented as part of a training program with an agency of Keystone Service Systems.
The purpose of this educational plan is to provide a broad-based curriculum utilizing comprehensive classroom experiences followed by hands-on training. The format is designed to strengthen each person's knowledge and skills in the field of social assistance, specifically in the field of mental health, mental retardation, physical disabilities and drug and alcohol dependence.
The number of classroom hours will vary throughout the training period but will average 5-10 hours of classroom or one-on-one instruction per week and 25-30 hours of hands-on training. Some classroom sessions are three days long while others are 2-hour modules.
Qualifications of the Trainee
The selected trainees are foreign nationals who wish to further their knowledge and understanding of people with disabilities and social work issues. Each applicant must desire to return to their county to apply their knowledge to benefit the people there in need of services. None of the applicants should have previously participated in an educational/training opportunity in the USA.
Primary Learning Objectives
The emphasis of the training program is in three specific areas of training. The first is an emphasis on a series of value-based training sessions that provide a solid foundation for successfully supporting individuals with disabilities. It recognizes the tremendous potential of all individuals to grow and learn as well as experience a meaningful and valued life in the community.
The second includes teaching the students' clinical and treatment approaches using state of the art interventions including instruction in motor development and the use of adaptive equipment, emotional and physical forms of support, social skills and behavioral intervention training and goal planning.
Finally, the students will be introduced to the fundamental skills needed to plan and operate a social service organization including structure and design of human services, management, leadership and effective utilization of resources.
