A CHANGE AGENT'S TOOLBOX: Methods for Moving Forward, Solving Problems, and Crafting Change
New Professional Development Series Workshop
Date: January 8
Location: Gordinier Hall, Millersville University, Millersville, PA
Time: 9:30 am - 3:30 pm
A world of complexity surrounds us…social, political, and environmental. For those working in our communities to improve life for others, it can be confusing and difficult to achieve goals and make progress.
Please join us as Dr. Thomas Neuville, an experienced facilitator with a long association with Keystone, focuses on "getting things done" - introducing specific tools to keep us on track, move forward, get "unstuck" when we have lost our way, and use time-tested means to make change in our work and our world.
SRV Study Group
IT CAN HAPPEN HERE: Implementing SRV in Agencies & Service Systems
Date: January 11
Location: Keystone Family Support Associates, Harrisburg, PA
Time: 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Prerequisite: Prior attendance at a three-day Introduction to Social Role Valorization workshop is required to register for this event.
Please join us for coffee and exploration around issues related to the concepts of Social Role Valorization.
At this study group, we will focus on incorporating the ideas of "relevance" and "potency" as a strategy for individual changes which can be a catalyst for moving organizations and communities toward change. It can be a daunting task to spark change within large human service organizations: to be more centered around the people who are served, to pay attention to the subtlety of image, to focus on the development of competencies. It requires that we know people well, that we think and behave with creativity and heart, and that we learn to walk beside people and understand who they are.
This study group will focus on ideas to weave SRV into agency cultures and make changes both big and small which truly make a difference for people.
HELPING PEOPLE TO HAVE A MEANINGFUL LIFE DURING THE DAY
Date: January 16 - 1
Location: Keystone Education Center, Harrisburg, PA
Time: 9:00am - 5:00pm each day
This two day workshop focuses on why it is so difficult to design and implement supports for people to have full, meaningful days, what kind of vision is required to guide our actions in this area, and how essential it is to help people develop positive social roles. In addition to the presentation, participants will work in small groups to develop concrete ideas around supporting one person to spend their time in more fulfilling and meaningful ways during the day.
This is an ideal workshop for people interested in developing supports for people which are quite different from many of the day and work programs typically available and offered.
CORNERSTONES OF QUALITY: Understanding Individualization, The Developmental Model, and the Culturally Valued Analogue
New Workshop
Date: January 18 - 19
Location: Keystone Education Center, Harrisburg, PA
Time:
  • 1/18: 9:30 am - 2:30 pm
  • 1/19: 9:30 am - 12 pm
Individualization
Tailoring supports to be specifically relevant to each person served is an essential part of providing quality services. How can we take care to assure that supports are truly person-centered and individualized? In services and settings where people are grouped together, relevant focus needs to be preserved. An overview of individualization and strategies for measuring and evaluating our successes in this area will be discussed.
The Developmental Model
As a core value within our organization and many others, we believe that all individuals grow and develop throughout their lives. As a learning, knowledge-based organization, we are committed to promoting activities demonstrated to lead to growth and positive change. How might this be done? How can the essential concepts of relevance and potency be used to design, develop, manage, and assess services? Please join us as we explain the Developmental Model and discuss methods of assessing service quality in light of The Developmental Model.
The Culturally Valued Analogue
One of the pillars of quality services for people with disabilities is asking and answering the question, "Are services and supports provided in the context of what exists within the typical valued society?" How might the answers to this question drive us to create relevant, helpful services? What does "The culturally valued analogue" mean, and how can we use this powerful tool to do better on behalf of vulnerable people?
This workshop is geared towards people who are involved in any way with service quality initiatives; all are welcome to join us for presentation and discussion on these questions.
February
THREATS TO THE SANCTITY OF LIFE OF PEOPLE WHO ARE DEVALUED
Date: February 5 - 6
Location: Keystone Education Center, Harrisburg, PA
Time: 9:00 am - 5:00 pm each day
Prerequisite: Prior attendance at a three-day Introduction to Social Role Valorization workshop is required to register for this event.
Social Role Valorization discusses the threats that face devalued people in our culture. In fact, the very lives of people who are marginalized and oppressed are at risk, and this workshop will examine the many forms that these threats can take. A combination of lecture, presentation, and small group discussion will help us consider these difficult issues in the lives of people and begin to examine ways to safeguard and defend people from these life endangering threats.
ROLE OF THE DIRECT SUPPORT PROFESSIONAL
New Workshop
Date: February 15
Location: Keystone Education Center, Harrisburg, PA
Time: 9:00 am-4:30 pm
Prerequisite: Registrants must have attended the first part of the Role of the Direct Support Professional series on 12/4/2006
Much time and thought has been given to helping vulnerable and devalued people to gain the good things in life by having positive social roles. For a human service to be successful in making this happen for the people they serve, it is essential that the role of the direct support worker be as defined and as clearly understood as possible.
This workshop will offer a chance for participants to explore the historical problems that have been encountered in defining this role, and offer adaptive role description which will be helpful in clarifying confusion and establishing the work that must be done for life to be full and rich for the people we serve.
THE POWER OF ROLES
Date: February 22
Location: Keystone Education Center, Harrisburg, PA
Time: 9:30 am - 4:30 pm
This workshop gives participants a practical introduction to the principles of Social Role Valorization. Through a combination of multimedia presentation and small group discussion, participants will learn about the phenomenon of social devaluation.
This event includes discussion of how people with disabilities and other devalued groups have been systematically hurt and harmed by society, and what the impact of that devaluation has been. Participants will learn about ways to help people have better lives by helping them achieve positive valued social roles. Practical strategies to make this a reality for the people you support are discussed.
March
TRANSFORMATION AND CHANGE AGENTRY: Being the Change You Wish to Make
New Professional Development Series Workshop
Date: March 12
Location: Gordinier Hall, Millersville University, Millersville, PA
Time: 9:30 am - 3:30 pm
Over the years, many of us have entered human services with a deep commitment to community, societal and personal change. Struggles and hardships, bureaucracy, resource issues, and deep unconsciousness about social devaluation and its consequences have robbed many of us, perhaps even most of us, of our hope for positive change, our desire to engage fully with the people we serve, and our belief that our work is contributing to a vision of a positive future.
Please join us as Dr. Thomas Neuville, an experienced facilitator with a long association with Keystone, leads us in reconnecting with our earliest hopes and ideals, renewing our passion for service, and crafting a vision of what is truly possible through personal service to others.

MISPERCEPTIONS, PERVERSIONS AND MISUNDERSTANDINGS ABOUT SOCIAL ROLE VALORIZATION
Date: May 8 - 9
Location: Keystone Education Center, Harrisburg, PA
Time: 9:00 am-4:00 pm
Prerequisite: Prior attendance at a three-day Introduction to Social Role Valorization workshop is required to register for this event.
This workshop will cover advanced topics in Social Role Valorization theory, and is designed for participants who have attended Introductory SRV training, and have some experience using the ideas.
Normalization, and later Social Role Valorization, have been principles on which a significant part of our service system has been based - the ideas that the good things in life will come to people who live in typical circumstances shared by the valued core of society and who have many highly valued social roles. Over the past 40 years, these ideas have often been badly misunderstood and misrepresented.
This workshop will identify the most common misperceptions, and help participants identify and respond to these in helping others understand and apply the principles to their work on behalf of devalued people.

The crafting of valued social roles will be approached on a number of levels such as individual, familial, organizational and societal and from several perspectives including practice, policy and research.

June
THE ART OF FACILITATION
New Workshop
Date: June 1
Location: Keystone Education Center, Harrisburg, PA
Time: 9:30am - 4:00 pm
"The novice teacher shows & tells incessantly; The wise teacher listens, prods, challenges and refuses to give away the right answer. Ideally, students remember what they have learned, not what the teacher told them." —Pritom Phookun
Group facilitation is an art and a skill, a science and an intuition. From keeping discussions on track to tuning into group energy, a gifted facilitator serves the group through focusing on the process as well as the content. Are your group meetings productive and upbeat? Do you leave feeling energized and as if you have accomplished what you set out to do? Do the relationships in your organization feel vibrant and inspiring? Don't settle for gatherings, learning events, and meetings that are boring, frustrating, or less than constructive. Come together and practice the skills required to be an effective process leader, to help groups work together, and to bring communities together with a common purpose.

Please join us for focused discussion, conversation and facilitated exercises as we explore the contributions that direct support workers make in the lives of people they support, delve into what the work means to us personally and professionally, and gain a measure of clarity together on what is worth doing and doing well.
EUGENICS: PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE
Date: June 27
Location: Keystone Education Center, Harrisburg, PA
Time: 9:00 am-12:00 pm
There are many ideologies that have influenced the evolution of our society and how we have chosen to treat others. Few of them are more powerful or have had more devastating impact than the Eugenics movement, the ideas of which were most fully developed in this country and passed on to Germany in the early 1920's with horrific consequences that are well known. This presentation will initially focus on the American Eugenics movement, its champions, its foes, and its work to wage war against the least of us through massive sterilization, brutalization, segregation, and euthanasia. We will then explore eugenics ideas and ideals at work within our society today, and what that can mean for vulnerable people.

Please join us as we present and discuss the importance of using SRV as a foundation for thinking about new and positive directions in mental health services as outlined in Pennsylvania's Call for Change. As we strive to move towards recovery- oriented supports and services, seeing the strong roots in SRV will help us safeguard the people we serve and the ideas we are trying to use so that lasting positive change is the result. Please join us as we explore the human experience of grief and loss, discuss strategies to move through and move onwards, and discover our own journey through this natural process of dynamic change which is so much a part of life.

This workshop will assist participants in thinking about how relationships start, develop, and grow. There will be time for reflection and brainstorming together around some of the challenges that present themselves when working to facilitate contacts and relationships between people who have been devalued and those within the societal mainstream. It all begins at the beginning, it has been said, and the same is true for our willingness as a society to show that everyone, indeed, belongs. How many more generations will grow up thinking that there are special schools and special classes for "those kids"? The same students, as adults, will in all likelihood perpetuate these beliefs in later life, continuing the cycle of rejection, exclusion, and distantiation. Please join us as we explore the possibilities of inclusion in our schools, the current climate and practices, and the benefits that we all will experience if we can create a world where all people's gifts are uncovered, shared, and celebrated – all together.

REAL LIVES, REAL ROLES

Prerequisite: Prior attendance at a three-day Introduction to Social Role Valorization workshop is required to register for this event.
Please join us for coffee and exploration around issues related to the concepts of Social Role Valorization.
Social Role Valorization teaches us that the "good things" in life come to people with valued social roles that are plentiful and well matched to the gifts and talents of the person. Much of our work is in helping people identify and move into these types of roles. Some of the broadest and most influential roles are the ones we struggle to help people we support move into. We'll discuss current ideas, projects, and tools and we will examine practical strategies to helping people experience the role of homeowner, business owner, university student, and others. Exciting and potent possibilities will abound in this study group.

HONORING PEOPLE'S HISTORIES
New Workshop
Date: December 13
Location: Keystone Education Center, Harrisburg, PA
Time: 9:30 am-4:00 pm
The first step in assessing what people may need in terms of supports, services and assistance is understanding the unique identity of the person. Nothing so powerfully shapes human identities like the life experiences that people have endured and survived. Many of the people we have supported over the years have difficulty articulating the stories of their lives, have few connections with people who can recount that history for them, and have few possessions to connect them with their past. Because of this, people's histories tend to be poorly understood, factually incorrect, full of myth and rumor, or even completely unknown. This leads to great difficulty in the people trying to assist the person to have a sense of the true identity of the person, their motivations, and their perspectives, with dire consequences to the person. This workshop will introduce you to tools, methods, and techniques to help re-discover people's histories, mine them for valuable meaning and relevance, and learn from them to better understand the person.

Keystone Institute Registration, Attendance, and Cancellation Information

Registrations for educational events will be taken by telephone, email, or US mail. Unless otherwise noted, events are on a first come/first served basis, so early registration is recommended. Waiting lists will be maintained for events which are filled to capacity, and cancelled spaces will be offered to those people on the waiting list.

For all events contained within the annual Keystone Institute Events Schedule, there is no per-event fee for tuition, materials, or training space for employees and board members of Keystone Human Services, people served by Keystone Human services or their family members. For other attendees, fees will be charged as in the Keystone Institute Event Fees listing, which is available by contacting us at 717-909-9425.

Unless otherwise noted, a simple lunch will be provided for each full day workshop. In order to make the most of the educational opportunities for all attendees, we ask that all participants make every effort to arrive on time to all events, return from breaks and lunch on time, and to stay until the conclusion of all events. Any plans to leave early or arrive late should be discussed with Institute staff prior to the event.

Cancellations for registrations are accepted up to three business days prior to the event. For cancellations received with less than three business days notice, there may be an event fee charged to the agency equal to the pro-rated cost of the event.

If you'd like more information or to register for any of the above trainings, please contact the Keystone Institute at 717-909-9425 or via email at registerki @ keystonehumanservices.org.
