"Cartridges 4 Canines"
Benefiting Susquehanna Service Dogs

(Harrisburg, PA) A press conference will be held at Keystone Human Services’ headquarters located at 124 Pine Street, Harrisburg, PA on November 21, 2007 at 10am to mark the unveiling of Cartridges 4 Canines, a program to support Susquehanna Service Dogs (SSD).
Businesses and individuals throughout Central Pennsylvania are urged to save toner and ink cartridges of all types for donation to Susquehanna Service Dogs as part of Cartridges 4 Canines. Harrisburg Copiers is teaming up with Keystone Partnership to support the work of SSD. A program of Keystone Human Services, SSD provides the Service Dogs that make it possible for individuals with disabilities to live more independent lives in the community.
It costs $20,000 to breed, raise, train, place and provide continued guidance for a Service Dog. Today, over 140 dogs are working and changing lives in communities throughout Central Pennsylvania and beyond. The immediate challenge is that the very people who would benefit from working with a Service Dog often do not have the funds to purchase one … not even the initial $5000 that is requested for placement. Cartridges 4 Canines proceeds can go a long way in filling this funding gap.
Arrangements can be made to pick up your used cartridges on a regular basis by registering on the web site or by calling Keystone Partnership or Harrisburg Copiers. Interested businesses and individuals may also register to participate on the Keystone Human Services website at www.keystonehumanservices.org. (The pick-up of cartridges can also be arranged on this site.)
Nancy Fierer, founder and director for SSD commented, "We are thrilled to have a partnership with Harrisburg Copiers in this ongoing collection effort. The demand for Service Dogs as well as Keystone Therapy Dogs is ever-growing. A continual funding stream will be pivotal in sustaining our program’s life-altering mission."
Founded in 1993 to provide Service Dogs to individuals with disabilities, SSD has in recent years expanded its mission to provide Keystone Therapy Dogs. Therapy Dogs participate in counseling sessions, provide comfort to persons who are older, suffering from trauma, illness and much more. Totally dependent upon donations from the community, Susquehanna Service Dogs is accredited by Assistance Dogs International and is a program of the United Way of the Capital Region.
SSD is a program of Keystone Children & Family Services, an agency of Keystone Human Services which provides support for individuals with autism, intellectual disabilities, developmental disabilities, those experiencing mental illness, children and family services as well as support for the elderly to live independently in their own home.
