Keystone Human Services International Moldova Association (KHSIMA) Equal Access to Education
October 2010 – present
Funded by the Open Society Early Childhood Program
In Moldova, Keystone Human Services International Moldova Association is working to provide equal access to education for all children. With funding from the Open Society Early Childhood Program, children with mental disabilities will receive support to be included in their local community schools.
The Equal Access to Education project is removing the barriers to inclusive education. Fifty children with mental disabilities are joining their peers in local community schools and learning in the same classrooms. To make this possible, Keystone Human Services International Moldova Association is developing and implementing new models of inclusive education. In harmony with the Community for All-Moldova program, which is developing community-based services to support children who have been institutionalized or who are at risk of institutionalization to remain in the community, the Equal Access to Education project is providing support for children with disabilities to receive the same opportunities for education as their peers.
To successfully support children with disabilities who are joining community schools, the project is strengthening the capacities of teachers, educators, parents and the local public administration. Schools are becoming accessible, and teachers are adapting their teaching approach and curriculum to the needs of children with mental disabilities. In addition, other supports and services are being provided so that all children can be successful in the classroom and reach their full potential.
The Equal Access to Education project aims to develop regulations and standards for supporting services in the classroom, and these inclusive schools will serve as a national model of inclusion. Inclusive education benefits everyone, helping to reverse the effects of stigma and discrimination and fostering an environment of acceptance and respect where the community embraces inclusive education and supports families with children with disabilities.
