A Word from the President

Mark Ritter
Mark W. Ritter,
President

Dear Key Friends,

Governor Jodi Rell recently signed legislation requiring group health insurance policies to cover the cost of diagnosing and treating autism in Connecticut. The law requires the coverage of behavioral therapy for children under 16, as well as certain prescription drugs and psychiatric and psychological services.

Before this legislation, families often had to pay high insurance premiums, and yet, they were denied coverage for Autism Spectrum Disorders. Parents have said that it can cost between $2000 and $5000 to diagnose a child with an Autism Spectrum Disorder.

The law takes effect on January 1, 2010 and will give many families with children with autism needed access to services and supports.

Sincerely,

Mark W. Ritter, President
