Dennis W. Felty
Dennis W. Felty, President, KHS

It is with sadness that I inform you of the passing of Dr. Wolf Wolfensberger on February 27, 2011. Over four decades ago, Dr. Wolfensberger called attention to the plight of the hundreds of thousands of citizens living in our institutions and shaped the deinstitutionalization movement across North America, Europe, New Zealand and Australia. He spoke out courageously on behalf of oppressed and marginalized people and worked tirelessly and with great diligence over his 76 years on behalf of some of the most vulnerable members of our society.

A powerful voice of change, Dr. Wolfensberger served as a mentor and teacher to many of us. He was a model of diligence, intellectual rigor and loyalty to the people he advocated for. He was also a prophetic voice and an unapologetic truth teller in the 1960s and the ensuing decades. His seminal work in developing Normalization and later Social Role Valorization has provided invaluable guidance over the years in forming our organizational vision and transcendent values, as well as in serving people in a manner that that contributed to their freedom, security and well being.

In the coming years, we will continue his legacy in pursuit of our vision of a world where all people are accepted and valued.
