Child with dog

We urge you to join us this year for Black Tie & Tails in support of Susquehanna Service Dogs (SSD), which provides children and adults the opportunity to lead full and independent lives in their communities. SSD, a program of Keystone Children & Family Services, raises, trains and places Service Dogs and Therapy dogs to individuals with disabilities, balance disorders, hearing loss and those facing the challenges of seizure disorder, autism and mental illness.

Service Dogs live permanently with individuals to provide support for the core elements of daily living such as opening doors, picking things up, pulling wheelchairs, mobility, controlling lights, notifying individuals of phones ringing, alarms going off or the arrival of visitors. They offer comfort and a bridge to the community.

SSD continues to support each of the more than 140 people who presently use service dogs in their daily lives. Each receives 24-hour professional support and annual *tune-up* training sessions. Additionally, Keystone Therapy Dogs assist with counseling sessions, therapy activities and make visits where needed for consolation and inspiration. Presently, regular visits are made to nearby hospital ante partum and psychological departments. The Therapy Dogs also welcome the people who use the services of Keystone Family Counseling Center several days a week.

The Susquehanna Service Dog program is completely dependent upon the donations of services, supplies and funds to continue their work. SSD is considered one of the finest service dog programs in the world and is accredited by Assistance Dogs International. Partial funding is provided by the United Way of the Capital Region.
